Mission:
The afforestation projects in Morogoro villages aim to demonstrate the ecological and economic benefits of forests to villagers through silviculture and tree planting examples.
Objectives:
The ultimate goal of the project was to get farmers to establish private forest stands. They were trained to produce seedlings, establish and manage the stands and utilize the wood obtained from them in the most diverse way possible.
The goal was to produce wood for various uses: as firewood, construction wood, for obtaining fruit from fruit trees, as raw material for burning charcoal and as sawn timber.
Implementation:
The Toivala Foundation had MOECO (Morogoro Environmental Cooperation Organisation) as a local partner, which implemented the project measures in accordance with the jointly agreed objectives. It also reported on the results.
Results:
The project was implemented in five villages in the Morogoro region and approximately 250 farmers participated. The total area of the established groves was approximately 50 hectares. The villagers received income from growing and selling the seedlings.
